関係詞の what(What I need is ...)The Relative What: What I Need Is …
関係詞 / Relative Clauses
関係詞の what は「〜するもの・こと」を1語で作ります: What I need is a vacation.(必要なのは休暇だ)。the thing that を丸ごと内蔵しているので、先行詞が要りません。文頭に置けば「大事なのは…」という焦点の当て方になり、スピーチや主張の定番装備です。
The relative what builds "the thing that …" in one word: What I need is a vacation. It has the antecedent built in, so none is needed outside. Fronted, it aims a spotlight — "what matters is …" — making it standard equipment for speeches and arguments.
先行詞を内蔵した関係詞
The Relative with Its Antecedent Inside
ふつうの関係詞は名詞に貼り付きますが(the thing that I need)、what はその the thing まで自分の中に持っています: what I need。だから名詞なしで、そのまま主語にも目的語にもなれる——What matters is honesty.(大事なのは誠実さ)/ I heard what you said.(言ったこと、聞いてたよ)。「the thing that の圧縮形」と覚えるのが一番の近道です。
Ordinary relatives attach to a noun (the thing that I need); what carries the thing inside itself: what I need. So it stands alone as subject or object — What matters is honesty. I heard what you said. The fastest handle: what = the thing that, compressed.
内蔵型の実戦The built-in antecedent at work
What I likeabout動詞が決める【like about = 〜のどこが好きか】like は普通そのまま目的語を取る(I like this town)が、「どの点が」を言うときは about を足す。about が「対象のうちの一部分」を切り出している。 this town is theなぜ the なのか【その場で一つに決まる】話し手と聞き手のいる状況で、どれを指すか一つに決まるから the。日本語なら「(例の)」「うちの」を補って読むと感覚が近い。 quiet.

what は先行詞を内蔵しているので、everything や the thing のような名詞の後ろには置けません(先行詞が二重になる)。名詞があるなら that(または省略)。「名詞なし→ what、名詞あり→ that」の一択問題です。
What carries its own antecedent, so it can't follow nouns like everything or the thing — the antecedent would double up. Noun present → that (or nothing). No noun → what. A one-question quiz.
