場所の説明は where、時の説明は when で接着します: the town where I grew up(育った町)、the day when we met(出会った日)。中身は in which / on which の圧縮形。when は省略されることも多く(the day we met)、口語では the place where より just where だけで受けることもあります。

When works the same: the day when we met = the day on which we met. The compression lightens the sound, making where and when the default in speech and ordinary prose.

場所を目的語として扱うなら普通の関係代名詞。Treating the place as an object takes the ordinary relative.

×This is the restaurant which I told you.
ここが、話してたレストランだよ。(のつもりで)
○This is the restaurant I told you about.

tell you about the restaurant の about が消えると接着が不完全になります。about を文末に残す(I told you about)か、話題を「そこで」の話にするなら where(the restaurant where we had the party =パーティーをした店)。「where にするか、前置詞を残すか」は、元の文に前置詞があるかで機械的に決まります。
Tell you about the restaurant loses its about and the glue fails. Either keep the preposition at the end (I told you about) — or, if the clause is about what happened there, use where (the restaurant where we had the party). Where versus stranded preposition is decided mechanically by the original sentence.
