ごとにまる Which Preposition the Adjective Wants

Prepositions

good at / interested in / afraid of / worried about。にもがあります。ほどはがつきます——at は一点り、in はみ、of はれのす。りはわせでえてください。そしてろはです。

Good at, interested in, afraid of, worried about: adjectives take fixed partners too. About half of them can be read off the picture — at narrows an ability to one target, in has you inside the interest, of cuts out the thing you fear. The rest are learned as pairs. And whatever follows a preposition has to be a noun or an -ing form.

Where the Picture Helps, and Where It Doesn't

good at は発揮される一点を at でっています。interested in はんでいる、afraid of はれのからしたもの。ここまではがそのままきます。ところが responsible for や similar to になると、よりもわせとしてまっているい。そうとせず、くところだけ使うのがです。

Good at narrows an ability to a single target with at. Interested in places you inside the interest. Afraid of cuts the feared thing out of everything else. So far the prepositions' pictures carry the load. But with responsible for or similar to, the pairing has hardened into something more fixed than pictorial. Using the picture where it works and learning the rest as units is the practical approach.

ろにいたです。れるのはで、も toりません。in learning がしいです。は but と except だけで、do nothing but complain(うばかり)のようにきます。りが good at / afraid of / used to のあとでもきます。とくに used to は to があるために toされやすく、I'm used to work early ではなく I'm used to working early がしいです。たらは -ing、とびつけておくとげます。なお、まるろにけます。I'm interested in what they proposed.(先方がある)。のかたまりとしてくからです。

This puts a bare verb behind a preposition. Prepositions take nouns and -ing forms, not a bare verb and not a to-infinitive, so it has to be in learning. But and except are the exceptions, allowing a bare verb: do nothing but complain. The same slip happens after good at, afraid of, and used to. That last one causes particular trouble because the to invites confusion with an infinitive: it's "I'm used to working early," not the bare-verb version. Pairing preposition with -ing in your mind heads it off. A clause opening with a wh- word is welcome, though, since it works as a noun chunk: "I'm interested in what they proposed."
