ごとにまる(と、らない) Which Preposition the Verb Wants

Prepositions

depend on / consist of / result in のように、ごとにまっているものがあります。がつくものもあれば、えるしかないものもある。もうひとつなのが、らないです。discuss the budget であって discuss about the budget とはいません。

Some verbs come with a fixed partner: depend on, consist of, result in. A few of these can be explained by the picture behind the preposition; others just have to be learned. Equally important is the set of verbs that take no preposition at all. It's discuss the budget, never discuss about the budget.

めるもの、えるもの、らないもの

Some You Can Picture, Some You Learn, Some You Drop

look の一族めます。look at は一点へ、look for はめてす、look after はろについてをする、look into はって調べる。わるとわるのがれます。一方 depend on の on には、そこまでがありません。このわせとしてえるほうがい。そしてが、そのものがです。

The look family reads straight off the picture. Look at aims the gaze at a point, look for searches after something wanted, look after walks behind and tends, look into goes inside to investigate. Change the preposition and the meaning changes with it. The on in depend on, by contrast, offers no such clarity, and pairs like that are faster learned whole. Then there's a third group: verbs that want no preposition at all.

わる The preposition changes the meaning

Could you look after 【look after = をする】 look after は「面倒る」。take care of とほぼ。after を「〜のあとで」とむとれないので、2で1つのとしてえる。 the なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 dog this weekend?

after =ろについて。をする After: walking behind, which is what tending looks like.

The なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 police are この いまのことを日本語の「〜している」となるが、では「一時である」ことをきもつ。 looking into める 【look into = 調べる】 look into は「をのぞく」から「調する」へ。む into の「へ」がきているので、のなかではみやすいほう。 the なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 complaint.

on にはない。わせでえる No clear picture behind this on. Learn the pair as a unit.

とのむ。わせがまっている。 A preposition sits between the verb and its object, and the pairing is fixed.

The team is relying on your report.

チームはあなたのてにしている。

らない

る。discuss / marry / enter / mention / approach など。 Takes the object directly: discuss, marry, enter, mention, approach.

She married a colleague from the Osaka office.

結婚した。

よくある Common Mistake

We discussed about the budget for nearly an hour.

について1時間した。(のつもりで)

We discussed the budget for nearly an hour.

について1時間した。

discuss はなので、about はです。「〜についてする」という日本語るため、それを about にえたくなるのがです。りやすいに、marry(×marry with)、enter(×enter into 部屋で)、mention(×mention about)、approach(×approach to)、answer(×answer to で)があります。この一群は「日本語るのにではらない」というえるとです。

Discuss takes its object directly, so about is redundant. The pull to insert one is strong, and it catches the same handful of verbs again and again. The same over-insertion hits marry (not marry with), enter (not enter into, when you mean a room), mention (not mention about), approach (not approach to), and answer (not answer to, when you mean a question). Learning them as a group of verbs that take no preposition is the efficient route.

  • depend on ... である わせでえる。rely on もじ on をる。 Learn it as a pair. Rely on takes the same on.
  • consist of ... 〜から of の「」のいている。す。 The part-of-a-whole picture at work, cutting out the components.
  • result in ... 〜という結果になる 結果っていくうなら result from。 Moving into the outcome. For the cause, it's result from.
  • apply for ... 〜にする for =めて。なら apply to。 For marks what you're after. The organization takes apply to.

まとめ Summary

  • look at / for / after / into のように、わる。 Look at, for, after, and into are different verbs, not variations.
  • depend on のように、めずえるしかないわせもある。 Some pairs, like depend on, resist explanation and are learned whole.
  • discuss / marry / mention はらない(enter も部屋では)。 Discuss, marry, and mention take no preposition, and neither does enter when it means a room.
  • +のかたまりでく。 Look things up as verb plus preposition, not verb alone.
