(not all)と(no) Not All Is Not the Same as None

Negation

Not all the students passed.、は No students passed.。not all はが all をうので「ではない」、no はからゼロ。

"Not everyone passed" and "nobody passed" are different claims. The first is "Not all the students passed"; the second is "No students passed." In not all, the umbrella covers the word all, so it denies totality. No starts at zero. The two blur together easily, since both end up negative.

Denying All, or Denying Everything

not all は、all という言葉そのものをします。

Not all cancels the word all itself. It's a reply to the claim that everything is included, and it says nothing about how much actually is. One exception is enough to make it true. No and none, by contrast, claim zero. The gap between them causes real trouble in reports and announcements, so the distinction is worth writing carefully.

Different proportions

seats are この be + 。 reserved.

Some seats are free. How many isn't stated.

No seats are この be + 。 reserved.

Zero. Every seat is open.

He isn't always late.

Always is what gets denied, so he is sometimes late.

(not all / not always / not both)

Denies all, always, or both. Some of it still holds.

Not everyone agreed with the plan.

(no / none / never)

Claims zero. Not a single case applies.

Nobody agreed with the plan.

Common Mistake

No students passed the final exam.

Not all the students passed the final exam.

No students passed. いたいときは not を all / every / always / both のいてください。

This writes a partial negative with no. "No students passed" reports that not a single one made it, which is a completely different fact. For a partial negative, put not in front of all, every, always, or both. Save no and none for a genuine zero. In a report of results, swapping these two inverts the numbers.

Leaves the possibility open rather than closing it. Common in discussion.
The cushion for a flat no, and the partial negative you'll hear most.
Corrects someone gently, sidestepping a full denial.
Denies always, and a handy way to say sometimes from the other direction.

Summary

  • not all は「ではない」、no は「ゼロ」。 Not all denies totality; no claims zero.
  • は not を all / every / always / both のく。 For a partial negative, put not in front of all, every, always, or both.
  • all ... not はしてける。 All … not is ambiguous. Move the negative forward and the reading is fixed.
  • not really / not quite Not really and not quite work as cushions against a flat denial.
