(up は、out は) What the Particles Mean

Phrasal Verbs

を1000ばらばらにえるはありません。があるからです。up は「」、out は「へ」から「」と「」、on は「」、off は「」、back は「復帰」。このてば、めてもかなりめます。ただしめるわけではない——めないは、かたまりでえます。

Nobody needs to memorize a thousand phrasal verbs one by one, because the particles carry family meanings. Up means completion; out means outward, branching into revealed and used up; on means continuing, off means cutting away, back means returning. Carry this map and many new phrasal verbs read themselves. Not all of them do, and the opaque ones get learned whole.

が、になる

From Direction to Meaning

eat up(べきる)・use up(使る)・fill up(たす)——up の「まで」のみます。find out(める)・work out(す)・point out(する)は、れていたものが。run out(れる)・sold out(れ)は、きるじ out から「」と「」の2系統ているわけです。go on(く)・hold on(つ)は接触の on が「いている」へ、call off(する)・cut off(する)はの off が「る」へ。そのもののカテゴリのしいので、ここではんだときの一望します。

Eat up, use up, fill up: the up picture of reaching the limit becomes completion. Find out, work out, point out: something hidden moves outward into view. Run out and sold out: the contents move outward until nothing is left. One particle, two branches — revealing and exhausting — both growing from the same outward motion. Go on and hold on stretch contact into continuation; call off and cut off sharpen separation into cancellation. The core pictures of each particle live in the preposition entries; this one surveys what happens when they team up with verbs.

てて Reading with the map

We 've この きたことを、いまとびつけて。「いつきたか」ではなく「いまどうなっているか」にがある。だから yesterday のような一点とは一緒使えない。 used up all the なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 paper.

ついにめた。

out =る=るみにる。 Out as revelation: the hidden comes into view.

よくある Common Mistake

My alarm went off, so I overslept.

目覚ましがまってしまって、ごした。(のつもりで)

My alarm didn't go off, so I overslept.

目覚ましがらなくて、ごした。

go off は「れる」ではなく「す・する」です。off の()からはけない、かない。went off を「れた」とむと、になります。めないったら、をこねくりすよりごとえるのがです。alarm goes off(す)・bomb goes off(する)・milk goes off(む——)。この go off 一族をおすすめします。

Go off means to start ringing or to detonate, not to switch off. The cutting picture of off simply doesn't derive it, which makes go off the poster child for map-resistant phrasal verbs. Read went off as stopped and you flip the meaning. When a phrasal verb resists the picture, don't force the logic; learn the sentence whole. Alarms go off, bombs go off, and in British English milk goes off (spoils) — a family worth memorizing outright.

  • find out める・ out =るみに。know とのいは「」をすこと。 Out as revelation, naming the moment of learning, unlike know.
  • give back back =へ。がそのままになる Back as return — the map at its most transparent.
  • hand in する in =へ。宿 In as into-the-box: homework and paperwork grammar.
  • go off す・する・() かないごとする。 The map-proof classic — memorize it in whole sentences.
