み(+になる) Phrasal Verbs: Small Words, New Verbs

Phrasal Verbs

look(る)に after をすと look after(をする)。(up・out・after などのさな)がくと、れて、しいひとつのになります。だからだけでかず、ろのさなまでめていてください。は4つあり、は「にしてみる」です。

Add after to look and you get look after, a new verb meaning to take care of. When a verb teams up with a particle (up, out, after and their friends), the meaning leaves simple addition behind and becomes one new verb. So look these up whole, verb plus particle. There are four patterns, and a single test sorts them: try a pronoun as the object.

えるわせ

More Than the Sum of Its Parts

give up(あきらめる)のは、give(える)にも up(へ)にもありません。ふたつわさってめてです。だからは「+おまけ」ではなく、それがひとつの。look なら look after(をする)・look up(調べる)・look into(調する)と、わるたびにまれます。このみをらないとです。は、い1よりもっているからです。

Neither give nor up contains any surrender, yet give up means exactly that. The meaning lives in the pair, not in the parts, which makes a phrasal verb a verb in its own right. Look alone spawns a family: look after (tend), look up (check in a reference), look into (investigate). Every new particle mints a new verb. Miss this system and everyday English stays foggy, because conversation runs on these far more than on their formal one-word cousins.

4つの The four patterns

The なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 car broke down on the なぜ the なのか 【そのつにまる】 のいるで、どれをすかつにまるから the。日本語なら「(の)」「うちの」をってむとい。 highway.

してくれる?

できるでもろでもよい。 Pattern two: separable — the object can split the pair.

She looks after 【look after = をする】 look(る)+ after(ろを)で「をする」。してもてこないになるのが。look at(る)・look for(す)とべると、だけでわるのがかる。 her neighbor's cat.

をしている。

I won't put up with 【put up with = 〜をがまんする】 3で1つの。put + up + with にけてもてこない。このず with のあとにく(put this noise up with ✗)。 this noise.

このにはがまんできない。

Try it on before you buy it.

してみて。

できない()

ろにく: look after it。むとれる。 The pronoun stays behind: look after it — splitting breaks it.

I'll look into it tomorrow.

明日それを調べておきます。

よくある Common Mistake

Who will look the baby after while you're away?

ちゃんの面倒るの?(のつもりで)

Who will look after the baby while you're away?

ちゃんの面倒るの?

look after はできないなので、めません。けに文法りません。にしてみてください。turn it off とえるならできる、look after it のようにろにくならできないです。ずどちらかのせているので、しいったら、ごとえるのがです。

Look after is an inseparable pattern, so the object can't wedge into the middle. You don't need grammar labels to tell the patterns apart; test with a pronoun. If turn it off works, the verb separates. If the pronoun follows whole, as in look after it, it doesn't. Dictionary examples always reveal which kind you're holding, so learn each new phrasal verb together with where its pronoun sits.

  • break down する・(が)する ①の。「れる」のが、にもいにもく。 Pattern one's flagship: collapse downward, for machines and negotiations alike.
  • look after ... 〜のをする ③のろにつき。イギリスい(は take care of が)。 Pattern three's flagship, walking behind to tend. Especially British; American English leans take care of.
  • put up with ... 〜をがまんする ④の。3でひとつ。tolerate の Pattern four's flagship: three words, one verb — everyday tolerate.
  • get on with ... 〜とくやる・〜をめる 3となら「うまくやる」、仕事となら「りかかる」。 Another three-worder: with people, getting along; with work, getting going.
